Mission Monarch

Mission Monarch is a domestic conservation program that also benefits wildlife and its habitat in Mexico. This initiative is about securing critical habitat for the monarch butterfly in the United States and in central Mexico. The Eastern Monarchs migrate to the Butterfly Biosphere every year. This sanctuary is home to millions of butterflies in the winter months. They travel thousands of miles from the eastern parts of North America to hibernate in this remote safe haven.

In partnership with Monarch Watch, our team tags wild Monarch butterflies during their fall migration. These tags will provide vital data about the species and their survival. Once fall migration concludes and the monarchs arrive at their wintering grounds in Mexico, data from tagged individuals is collected and used to answer questions concerning the origins of migrant butterflies, their timing and pace, mortality rates, and changes in geographic distribution. Answering these questions is of paramount importance to the overall monarch conservation effort, and we are thrilled to be a part of it!
